Abstract
  • Reviews the book, Clinical Manual of Cultural Psychiatry edited by Russell F. Lim (see record 2006-05742-000 ). Cultural competence might seem an overwhelming prospect to those on the front lines providing psychosocial support through counseling and psychotherapy. This book is a useful tool for clinicians in this position, as it provides information critical to effective assessment and treatment for ethnically diverse populations. Although written specifically for the field of psychiatry, the manual also has relevance for psychologists and other mental health practitioners. The concise yet thorough text offers general practice recommendations as well as group-specific information relevant to the four largest racial/ethnic groups in the United States. Divided into three sections, the book contains three chapters that address culturally sensitive clinical practice in general and four chapters that address issues germane to specific identity groups. The groups included are African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos/Hispanics, and Native Americans and Alaska Natives. Lim's text promotes respect for the ethnically diverse cultures presented by meeting clients where they are and using their beliefs and values in support of comprehensive and effective care. The Clinical Manual of Cultural Psychiatry is extremely practical and will be useful for students and those with more experience in the various disciplines of mental health care.
