- Abstract
- Reviews the book, Brief Coaching for Lasting Solutions by Insoo Kim Berg and Peter Szabo (see record 2005-14223-000 ). The brief coaching model described is grounded in the solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) approach to counseling developed by Berg and her colleague Steve de Shazer. And, not unlike the counseling theory, the brief coaching model described by Berg and Szabo first and foremost emphasizes the importance of language in shaping experience. Berg and Szabo wisely note in the final chapter the importance of knowing the limits of one's skills as a coach. Here they describe the importance of being able to make a referral to a mental health practitioner or medical doctor, and they give specific information on how to handle a client in crisis. The book is an easy read; the language is simple and not peppered with unnecessary professional jargon. The text is well organized, and readability is increased with the creative insertion of questions from the field and quotations from coaching professionals. Application is stressed and the book made more interesting through the liberal use of case examples. While the book may not be ideal for those with doctoral-level training in psychology who are making a plunge into coaching, for those with less-specialized training in the helping professions, it is an invaluable resource.
