  • This article reviews the book, "Culturally Competent Practice With Immigrant and Refugee Children and Families" (see record 2004-13849-000 ). This goal of this edited book is to offer a comprehensive guide for service providers including social workers, counselors, psychologists, and medical health care professionals working with today's immigrants and refugees. Each year, thousands of immigrants and refugees journey to the United States in search of improved living conditions for themselves and their families. Most arrive with very few resources and are unprepared for the myriad challenges they will face in settling into their new environment. Social workers and other human services providers are often in a position to assist these individuals and, if armed with the appropriate information, facilitate a smoother transition. The primary tenet of this text is that consideration of the native cultural values, beliefs, and coping strategies of immigrants and refugees is necessary for effective assessment and intervention. To this end, recommendations are made regarding the essential knowledge base of the service provider concerning the cultural background of those that he or she is helping.
